Tom Auton

Being an artist in Wales you are always going to get that stereotype of being in a choir or only sing classical but if you look at what Wales has produced this little bit of land on the edge of the United Kingdom has a proud history of rock and pop musicians. Marina and the Diamonds, Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, Feeder, and Catfish and the Bottlemen are all artists trying to change that stereotype. Tom Auton in my mind is going to be the next big thing to come out of Wales.

From Cardiff Tom is a 21 year old singer-songwriter loves his blues and got the music bug at the young age of 11 when he got the chance to see Green Day live and he says that after seeing Billi Joe Armstrong singing Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) he knew then and there he wanted to be a musician so much so he got his first open mic gig a year later. Taking inspiration from the likes of Royal Blood, The White Stripes, and John Mayer Tom has crafted himself an incredible Blues/Rock sound that is a magical blend of catchy lyrics and solid guitar riffs so much so that he has been supported by BBC Radio Wales and Radio Cardiff. He has found this to be a bit of a challenge as he found it hard to find his place within the network, in his own words “they only seemed to be interested preppy indie bands and didn’t really have time my kind of music” They are missing out in my mind.

Tom produces as well and he learned this from a friend when he was younger not only does he produce his own stuff but for other artists too not really fair being that talented is it? I love the track “Blues Train” it’s just a great rock song with a killer hook. The song is about how music is a gateway out of your own mind and how music is a way of coping with the battles that go on in your head I guess that’s what the blues is all about though using music to cope with struggles.

The Bottle Breakers are Tom’s live band and before Lockdown they filmed 4 songs live from The Gate together you can find these on YouTube and I recommend you do as you will get a real sense of how Tom conducts himself and see the relationship he has with the band Tom has an incredible musical mind and is someone who truly loves to play and create. He has a clear focus on staying independent to prove that you can be successful without being part of a major label and I admire that. Go check him out wherever you get your music from this guy is super talented.
